Steven Gerrard sent 'next step' message as Liverpool legend favourite for Aston Villa job

Steven Gerrard is currently one of the frontrunners to become the new manager of Aston Villa following the departure of Dean Smith.

It was announced earlier today by the Midlands club that Smith had been dismissed, prompted by a recent run of five successive league defeats.

Former Liverpool legend Gerrard is one name who has emerged as a favourite for the vacant position at Villa Park, with the Telegraph claiming Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is also 'high on the wish list' of Villa.

Since taking on his maiden first-team managerial role in 2018, the ex-Reds captain has helped restore Rangers' status as the top side in Scotland and ended the club's ten-year wait for top-flight success last season in impressive style.

The Gers remained undefeated throughout the entirety of the 2020/21 league campaign, winning the title by a comprehensive margin of 25 points.

Gerrard could soon have a decision to make on his future should Villa make an official approach for his services, and Liverpool supporters have no doubt that this would be an ideal move for the 41-year-old.

Viewed as the direct replacement for Jurgen Klopp, should the German leave as expected in 2024, many Reds believe this opportunity would equip Gerrard well to take over at Anfield further down the line.

At the time of writing, Gerrard is currently the favourite for the Villa role on SkyBet (5/2), Paddy Power (6/4), Betfair (6/4) and Ladbrokes (7/4).
