Next step in 'New York-style' transformation of barren Liverpool neighbourhood approved by council

The next step in a massive plan to transform part of Liverpool City Centre has got the go-ahead from the council.

A hotel, multi-storey car park and power centre all form the next part of the Paddington Village development, which was approved by the council's planning committee today.

Paddington Village is part of a plan to redevelop a large area of land just past the new Royal Hospital building.

The site had been empty for a number of years following the demolition of a number of buildings but it's hoped the council-backed plan to develop it will bring major new life to the area.

City mayor Joe Anderson has previously called progress on the project 'phenomenal'.

Speaking earlier this year, Mayor Anderson said: "It is absolutely amazing - I am hugely impressed by the work that's going on at the site."

Council documents say the next phases of the project will sit near other major developments within the site, with 'the Royal College of Physicians 'Spine' building currently under construction' directly to the south.

Approval means work will be able to begin on the 17 storey hotel, which is aimed at supporting the growing science, health and technology industries in the area.

It will have 221 rooms as well as a restaurant, bar, meeting spaces and a gym.

Other projects currently underway at Paddington Village include a new cancer centre and and international college.

And a statement on the project's website says that the 30 acre site will be 'a sizeable urban village, inspired by the sense of community you’d find in the likes of Greenwich Village in New York'.

However, so far there have been no further updates on plans originally proposed in 2016 for a Merseyrail station to service the new area.
