Next Scotland manager: Michael O'Neill installed as long shot to replace Alex McLeish

Michael O'Neill has been installed as a long shot to replace Alex McLeish after he was relieved of his duties as Scotland boss.

McLeish was told of the decision earlier today following a meeting with the SFA board.

Scotland suffered a disappointing start to their UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a 3-0 loss to Kazakhstan and that poor result ultimately cost McLeish his job with the national side.

The SFA will be looking at a host of candidates to take Scotland forward and, according to Sky Bet, it looks to be a wide open race.

U21s coach Scot Gemmill has been installed as the favourite to replace McLeish at 5/4 with David Moyes, Steve Clarke and Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes in the frame.

But an interesting name that has cropped up at 20/1 is Northern Ireland manager O'Neill.

Rangers-bound Jordan Jones in social media spat with ex-Morton ace Jai Quitongo

The 49-year-old was Scotland's number one target after Gordon Strachan's departure, but turned down the job, leading to McLeish's appointment.

There's no reason why Scotland shouldn't turn to O'Neill once again with the former Shamrock Rovers boss boasting a stellar CV with the green and white, but it's more than likely he is still hesitant on making the switch.
