'Next Rooney' - Leeds United fans make Joe Gelhardt prediction after fantastic under-23s display

Leeds United fans have drawn comparisons to Wayne Rooney after Joe Gelhardt's fantastic performance for the Under-23s.

The Whites signed the England Under-18 international from Wigan Athletic in the summer, where he had formed a reputation as one of the country's brightest up-and-coming talents.

Since arriving at Leeds, Gelhardt has been working with the Under-23 side and has impressed, with his latest sparkling display coming against Newcastle United.

Things started off fantastically for Mark Jackson's side, who were 3-1 up at half time thanks to goals from Joe McCarron and Gelhardt.

The first two came courtesy of McCarron, with fantastic link-up play from the two youngsters, with Gelhardt bursting into the box having won possession back and finding his teammate with an inch-perfect pass.

Gelhardt then scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-0, before Newcastle pulled a goal back before completing a second-half comeback to win 4-3 at the death.

Despite the late disappointment for Leeds after a dominant opening half, supporters were left dazzled by the performance of Gelhardt.

With the Whites missing Rodrigo Moreno for Saturday's game against Crystal Palace as he isolates following a positive COVID-19 test, some fans have even suggested 18-year-old could make the bench for the trip to Selhurst Park.

Here's a look at what they had to say across social media following the youngster's latest impressive cameo.

Marcelo Bielsa has proven he isn't afraid to throw young players into the squad and with Leeds short of offensive options, Gelhardt's display has convinced some fans that 'the new Wayne Rooney', could appear for United tomorrow.

The Leeds boss spoke about Gelhardt at length during his pre-Crystal Palace press conference, confirming the forward is on his radar.

“Yes, he is a player that is progressing,” Bielsa told reporters. “The evolution of the whole U23s team, we follow it closely.

“We analyse every performance of the U23s as if it were the first team and because normally we train with 22 players and when we are missing any of those we sub them with the U23s. I think that around 50% of the U23s players can apply for a place on our team.”
