Next Rangers manager: Chelsea legends Frank Lampard and John Terry among favourites

Former Chelsea player and manager Frank Lampard is among the early favourites to be the next Rangers manager.

Ex-Blues defender and captain John Terry is also in the top five of the bookmaker's picks to become the next boss at Ibrox.

The SPFL champions are on the search for a new manager as former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard left the club to take the vacant Aston Villa job.

The appointment marks a return to the Premier League for Gerrard, his first since he left the Reds as a player in 2015 for LA Galaxy.

He then took the step into senior management with Rangers, winning the Scottish League title last season and ending an almost ten-year run of league titles for rivals Celtic.

The 41-year-old making the switch has then opened the door to a new arrival north of the border, with both Lampard and Terry linked.

Lampard entered management when he took the reins at Derby County in 2018, guiding the Rams to a play-off final where the side subsequently lost to Villa at Wembley. That summer, he then moved back to Stamford Bridge.

With the task of a transfer embargo and bringing through youth, the former midfielder guided the team to a Champions League finish. However, he wasn’t able to continue that momentum and was dismissed in early 2021 for new current Blues boss Thomas Tuchel.

As for Terry, he is yet to make the jump to management as a head coach but he has plenty of experience. The 40-year-old spent three years at Villa Park as the assistant manager to the now-departed Dean Smith.

He has previously stated his intentions to be a manager in the future.

On the new vacancy, the bookmakers have Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Derek McInnes as the two favourites. In third is Lampard, fourth is Swansea City boss Russell Martin and fifth is Terry.

Odds courtesy of Betfair:

Giovanni van Bronckhorst - 8/11

Derek McInnes - 11/2

Frank Lampard - 15/2

Russel Martin - 15/2

John Terry - 9/1

Alex Neil - 14/1

Ronald Koeman - 14/1
