Next online re-opens but is forced to close 90 minutes later as it is flooded with orders

Fashion retailer Next re-opened its website yesterday (Tuesday April 14) but was forced to close it again just 90 minutes later after filling its daily order target.

Almost three weeks after taking its online retail site offline to protect warehouse workers, Next re-opened at 7am on Tuesday morning.

On their website a statement explained Next warehouse managers had "successfully tested opening and taking a limited number of orders".

It adds: "In order to operate our warehouse safely, we are limiting the number of warehouse colleagues working at any time, and so we will limit the number of customer orders we can take each day."

Next has also posted a video on their website explaining the changes they've made to "ensure colleagues can work safely" for customers.

The retailer says it's been working tirelessly to introduce extra safety measures in its warehouses and "ensure the staff who want to come to work are safe, can carry out their work safely, and feel safe."

They re-opened on Tuesday morning selling only childrenswear and selected homeware items online.

But by 8.30am Next had to close the website, as it had reached the daily order limit, reflecting the reduced capacity at its warehouses.

At the time of writing (Wednesday afternoon) the Next website is displaying a notice to customers saying: “We have now passed today’s limit and will not be taking any more orders until tomorrow morning”.

But shoppers will have to wake up early if they want to catch them.
