Next Manchester United manager: Wayne Rooney ‘committed to Derby’ amid links to Old Trafford return

Wayne Rooney insists he is committed to Derby after being linked with the Manchester United job following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United are looking to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season and Rooney has been touted as a possible candidate to take over.

Derby are 18 points from safety at the bottom of the Championship after being docked 21 points but Rooney, who scored 253 goals in 559 appearances for United as a player and is a legend at Old Trafford, says he remains committed to the Pride Park club.

Speaking after Derby beat Bournemouth 3-2 in the Championship on Sunday, Rooney said: “It is always sad when a manager loses their job, especially a former team-mate of mine. I feel for Ole.

“The club have made their decision on Ole’s future, so it is a sad day for Ole.

“In terms of myself, as I have said I am committed to the club until I get told otherwise.”

Asked if it would be irresistible if he was approached about the United job, Rooney said: “Listen, I am Derby County manager. I keep working hard to get the best results on the pitch for this team. As I have said, I am committed to this club.”
