Brian Lohan is the favourite to take over the Clare senior hurlers after expressing his interest to the county board.
The four-time All-Star has put himself forward to county chairman Joe Cooney and secretary Pat Fitzgerald, according to reports.
But the Scariff man and Fitzgibbon Cup winning manager faces stiff competition in the form of former joint manager Donal Moloney - who is in the running after his term in charge ended following Gerry O'Connor's resignation this summer.
Lohan guided a star-studded UL team to Fitzgibbon glory in 2015, narrowly missing out to Mary Immaculate the following year.
Also in the running is two-time Clare All-Ireland winning captain and popular TV pundit Anthony Daly.
