Next Bike shared a picture of Cardiff Castle to promote English Tourism Week - and people aren't happy

Cycle hire firm Next Bike has apologised after it promoting England - using a picture of Cardiff Castle.

The bike-sharing scheme, which launched in the Welsh capital 12 months ago, made the social media gaffe on Saturday.

They posted an image of a woman on one of their bikes with the caption "It's the start of #EnglishTourismWeek so tell us your favourite places to visit in the UK (especially on your nextbike!)".

Bosses at the firm, whose UK headquarters are based in London, failed to spot two obvious giveaways in the image  - Cardiff Castle's famous walls and lots of daffodils, Wales' national flower.

And unsurprisingly, Next Bike came in for a bit of stick from fellow Twitter users.

Photographer Chris Roberts tweeted: "This tweet implies that England and the UK are the same thing and interchangeable. On its own, the tweet is already problematic, but the photo that’s been added has Cardiff Castle in the background!...which is in Wales!!"

"I’m not sure @VisitEngland would be overly keen on the fact that you’re using *English* Tourism Week to promote Wales. Also, I’m sure @VisitWales would prefer it if you promoted Cardiff during Wales Tourism Week, which runs from the 11th to the 19th."

And Gethin Matthews-Jones said: "Wonderful trolling by @nextbikeUK , In #EnglishTourismWeek , they ask for the best places to visit in the *UK* with an image framed by daffodils, an icon of Wales."

Someone stripped this Cardiff nextbike of its wheels, brakes and handlebars and dumped the frame

The group have now apologised for the Tweet and said the image was not intended to "offend" Welsh customers.

Krysia Solheim, managing director of Next Bike UK, said: "In retrospect, we understand how the messaging may have caused offence and we would like to apologise for our mistake.

"We’re incredibly proud to be active in Wales and have invested a huge amount of time and resources to help make bike share an integral part of everyday life in Cardiff.

"Since it launched, the scheme has received phenomenal support from the wider Cardiff community and we’re looking forward to rewarding that loyalty with additional bikes, stations and localised campaigns over the next 12 months."

The number of Next Bikes is set to double this year in Cardiff with an additional 500 bikes and 65 docking stations.

In total there will be 1,000 bikes and 120 docking stations in the city by the end of 2019.
