Next Arsenal manager odds: Update on Simeone, Arteta, Vieira, Allegri and more

Mikel Arteta is the favourite to become Arsenal's next permanent manager following Freddie Ljungberg's shaky start to life as interim boss.

The Gunners drew away at Norwich in Ljungberg's first game in the dugout before Thursday night's defeat at home to Brighton.

The Swede had emerged as the bookmakers' leading candidate to take the reins full-time, and Standard Sport understands Ljungberg will be considered for the role if he can spark a turnaround in fortunes.

But he is now facing a real scrap to prove he is the right choice after Thursday's performance was met with jeers by the Arsenal fans. There were again plenty of empty seats at Emirates Stadium for the defeat to the Seagulls, suggesting it is not just the board Ljungberg needs to convince.

Manchester City assistant and former Arsenal midfielder Arteta leads the way, with Patrick Vieira also among the front-runners, though Arsenal are reportedly focusing their search on managers who are out of work as things stand.

The Telegraph reports that the Gunners have started interviewing candidates, though Max Allegri - who left Juventus earlier this year - has ruled out a return to management until the summer.

"As soon as the relationship with Juventus came to an end the decision was to take a year out," he said.

Here are the managers who could replace Unai Emery as Arsenal manager, according to the bookmakers…

Mikel Arteta Man City assistant coach, ex-Arsenal captain 9/2
Patrick Vieira Nice, and club legend 9/2
Freddie Ljungberg Arsenal coaching staff, club legend 5/1
Max Allegri Unemployed/Former Juventus manager 6/1
Eddie Howe Bournemouth 10/1
Vitor Pereira Shanghai SIPG FC 10/1
Brendan Rodgers Leicester 12/1
Carlo Ancelotti Napoli 14/1
Mauricio Pochettino Unemployed/Former Tottenham manager 16/1
Rafa Benitez Dalian Yifang 16/1
Marcelino Unemployed/Former Valencia manager 16/1
Diego Simeone Atletico Madrid 16/1
Marcelo Gallardo River Plate 16/1
