Next Arsenal captain and who must replace Laurent Koscielny as Unai Emery's skipper this summer

Laurent Koscielny's time as Arsenal captain has come to an end.

Maybe not officially. Disciplinary action is sure to follow his decision to refuse to take part in the club's pre-season tour.

It is only a matter of time before he is stripper of the armband, his position untenable.

Leaving aside the need to replace him as a defender in the Arsenal back line, Unai Emery will also need to find a leader to take on his role in the dressing room.

Who is the right candidate to be the next Arsenal captain?

Alexandre Lacazette, Granit Xhaka, Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding - there are already a number of names doing the rounds on social media.

Having assessed Arsenal's options, the football.london team have put forward the names they would like to see lead the Gunners into a new era this summer.

The Arsenal captaincy should be one of the most prestigious honours in world football.

It is a position with roots back to the club's first leader, David Danskin, founded the team in 1886.

Going back into the history books and legendary names such as Percy Sands, Charlie Buchan, Alex James and Eddie Hapgood jump out from the pages, while Frank McLintock and Tony 'Mr Arsenal' Adams were icons of their own eras.

All great leaders inspire by example and Koscielny has failed to set the right one, and disrespecting the status of the armband in the process.

For me the next Arsenal captain has to be Hector Bellerin.

As David 'Rocky' Rocastle said, repeating a mantra that is imbued in the DNA of The Arsenal: "Remember who you are, what you are and who you represent."

That is Bellerin to a tee.

Arsenal are hardly overburdened with potential heirs to Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira.

One of the disappointing realities of the final years of Arsene Wenger's reign was the steady degradation of the armband.

At one point they even forgot to name a captain for the second half of a match against Manchester City.

Those up-and-at-them leaders of the past are nowhere to be seen at Arsenal. Time to look for something new.

Arsenal need a unifying force, a player who represents what this club aspires to be. The choice is obvious: Hector Bellerin.

A guaranteed starter for as long as he remains at Arsenal, he has come through the academy and came on leaps and bounds since Wenger committed to giving him a run of games even after a slow start to his career.

What's more, Bellerin is among the vanguard of modern footballers determined to use their position, power and wealth to speak out on issues, from his commitment to LGBT rights to his financial support of victims of the Grenfell fire.

In his own way he already takes the lead, regularly fronting up in the post-match mixed zone and offering his support and advice to the next generation, such as Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Bellerin is as Arsenal in 2019 as they come. Why not task him with leading the club into the future?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

It may be a more short-term option but Arsenal are in a position where two of Unai Emery's five captains have already left.

Aaron Ramsey and Petr Cech are gone. Koscielny wants to leave. Mesut Ozil's situation is far from clear.

There isn't an obvious candidate standing out from the rest of the squad. It's too early for Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin.

Appointing Skhodran Mustafi as captain would be a disaster despite him being one of the most experienced heads, on paper.

But what about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang? Last season's leading scorer is a dominant personality in the dressing room and one who will be tasked with firing the Gunners back into the Champions League in 2020.

He may not have been at the club all that long but the group was immediately bolstered by his arrival in January 2018.

Aubameyang is already one of the most liked and repsected players in the dressing room.

It helps that he has already captained Gabon and know what it means to be the official leader of a team.

His close bond with Alexandre Lacazette is well documented but what has been more impressive is his focus on helping the younger players make the step up.

Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson have enjoyed his mentoring and he has also spoken highly of Folarin Balogun.

Not all captains have to scream and point. Aubameyang is clearly not of that ilk. But some leaders have an aura about them.

Players gravitate towards them and above all else they command respect.

Strikers don't always get the nod but before he turned his back on Arsenal, a certain Dutchman showed the Gunners just how inspirational a forward can be as a leader.

Aubameyang ticks many boxes that makes him a suitable option to replace Koscielny.
