A Co Down woman has been scammed out of £1,200 after calling the maker of her printer to say it was not working.
After contacting the legitimate business, she was told they would call her back a short time later.
However before they got the chance, a scammer called the lady’s number and asked if she had been having trouble with her computer.
A spokesperson for Scamwise NI said: “Believing this to be the call back, the lady wasn’t suspicious and followed their instructions.
“Unfortunately, it was just a case of really bad timing.
“The scammer was probably phoning tons of people at random and got lucky this once.
“The scammer ended up taking £1,200 out of the lady’s bank account after she provided bank details and a photo of her driving licence.”
Meanwhile Scamwise have warned drivers too to be careful of automated phonecalls accused them of breaking the law.
It appears to be the latest attempt by criminals to squeeze money from unsuspecting members of the public.
Drivers are being targeted in a new scam which claims they have been caught on camera using their phone at the wheel.
A spokesperson for Scamwise NI, said: Someone will get a phone call and on the other end is an automated message saying that you have been caught being on your mobile phone whilst driving and will be getting a £60 fine and six penalty points.
“If you get a call like this, hang up and don’t follow any instructions. It’s a scam.
“The police will never contact you using an automated phone message.”
