Newtownards road resurfacing scheme will leave parts of the town closed to traffic

A £165,000 road resurfacing scheme in Newtownards Town Centre will start on Monday, closing roads for four days.

The resurfacing work will be carried out on Regent Street, extending approximately 300 metres from the junction with Gibsons Lane to the Church Street junction.

Work will also be carried out 50metres into Church Street, Frederick Street and William Street.

Due to the nature of the scheme, which is focusing on improving both the structural integrity and surface of the road, overnight road closures will also be in operation.

Roads will be closed between the hours of 7pm on Monday, May 13 to 6am on Friday, May 17 in the following areas:

Regent Street and Church Street will be closed to through traffic from the junction with Gibsons Lane to the junction with Darragh Lane from 7pm to 6am,

Frederick Street will be closed to through traffic from its junction with Regent Street to its junction with Frederick Street roundabout from 7pm to 6am

William Street will be closed to through traffic from its junction with Regent Street to its junction with West Street from 7pm to 6am.

A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure said: "Diversionary routes for through traffic approaching the roads affected by the closures will be clearly signed.

"In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with care when travelling through, or in the vicinity, of the works.

"The Department has programmed the work and traffic management arrangements to minimise any inconvenience, however, drivers should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys.

"Completion of the work by 17 May 2019 is dependent on favourable weather conditions, however, the Department will keep the public informed of any change."
