Newtownards Road crash involving police car sees man taken to hospital

A pedestrian has been taken to hospital following a collision involving a police car.

The incident happened around 10.20pm on Newtownards Road, East Belfast on Tuesday September, 15. No other vehicles were involved.

The man was taken to hospital following the incident for assessment of the injuries sustained.

The PSNI cordoned off the road from the junction with Dee Street to Upper Newtownards Road and traffic was diverted for more than an hour.

The condition of the injured man has not been released by the PSNI today, but they have confirmed this morning that the Police Ombudsman is investigating the crash.

A PSNI spokesman said: "A male pedestrian was injured following a one vehicle road traffic collision at the Newtownards Road , East Belfast area at around 10:20pm last night (Tuesday 15 September).

"The injured man was taken to hospital following the incident. A police vehicle was involved in the road traffic collision and the office of the Police Ombudsman has been informed.

One East Belfast resident who was working in the area of the accident last night, said today: "We had been told that a pensioner had been knocked down by a police car but it was so dark and hard to see what exactly had happened.

"Suddenly there were sirens and a lot of activity and the road was closed off very quickly. We'd been told the man was taken to the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald.

"We could see he's been on the ground and the police in the car rushed to him and then other officers arrived.

"I hope everyone make a full recovery from this - it must have been scary for everyone involved."
