Newtownards Airport incident sparks emergency response as one man suffers minor injury

Emergency services attended an incident at Newtownards Airport earlier this afternoon after a light aircraft crashed off the runway.

Police, the fire service and ambulance service all attended the scene after the light aircraft overturned.

It is understood it happened at around 3.30pm.

One man suffered a minor injury, police said, but the ambulance service added that after assessment and treatment at the scene, no one was taken to hospital.

The fire service sent two appliances from Newtownards Fire Station and a spokeswoman said: "Firefighters were called to an incident where a light aircraft had crashed off the runway. There was no fire and all persons were out of the aircraft when Firefighters arrived, so no rescue was necessary.

"As fuel had leaked from the aircraft, Firefighters laid a foam blanket as a precaution. The incident was dealt with by 4.08pm."

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police received a report of an overturned light aircraft at Newtownards Airport at around 3.30pm.

"Officers along with NIFRS and NIAS attended. One man suffered a minor injury."

In a statement, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said they received a 999 call just after 3.30pm to attend an incident at Comber Road, Newtownards.

"NIAS despatched one Emergency crew to the scene," a spokesman said.

"Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, no one was taken to hospital."
