Newsreader's optical illusion dress sparks debate over whether it's blue or white

It's been almost six years since a dress caused a worldwide stir and divided the internet as millions argued if it was black and blue or gold and white.

The optical illusion was first posted online by aspiring singer Caitlin McNeill from Scotland and it proved a huge talking point - and now another trick-of-the-eye dress has sparked a fierce debate.

Australian newsreader Kendall Gilding shared a snap of her posing in a dress before she went live on television on Channel 7, describing it as the 'freshest white'.

But the photo confused her 13,000 followers, with many claiming it looked blue.

Sharing the snap, the newsreader wrote: 'Wednesday in White! Living for this dress - the smooth lines, lapel collar detail, divine fabric, the freshest of white!'

One person replied: "It looks blue," while another wrote: "Definitely blue, but beautiful."

A third commented: "It looks blue, because it is blue."

Kendall added: "You're not the first person to say this! I think it must be the low light that we took it in!"

She then shared a snap of her wearing the dress under the bright lights in the studio, revealing that it is in fact white.

So why does this optical illusion happen?

Back in 2015, Professor Stephen Westland explained to the BBC his theory on the optical illusion on original 'dress' that went viral in 2015, which many people thought looked white and gold.

He said: "People think if they take a photo of something, people will see the same thing but of course that is not true.

"If it hadn't been taken under very strange lighting this probably wouldn't have happened because if you look at the manufacturer's picture, it is indisputably blue and black."
