Newsreader red faced after being caught with feet up on desk

A newsreader was left red-faced after he was caught with his feet up on the desk live on TV.

During the BBC's live coverage of Boris Johnson's fight to keep his job as Prime Minister, the company cut away to Tim Wilcox, who was caught leaning back with his feet up in the air checking his phone.

Ros Atkins was in the middle of reporting from outside Number 10, where ministers are understood to be asking Boris Johnson to resign over his handling of the Chris Pincher scandal. But during his coverage, while he was explaining the current situation at Downing Street, the camera unexpectedly cut back to the BBC studio.

When it did, it caught the unprepared BBC journalist relaxing in the studio. Wilcox glanced up from his phone before realising the camera was switched on and quickly moved his feet off the desk and took off his glasses.

The embarrassing moment only lasted a few seconds but was captured by eagle-eyed viewers. TV critic Scott Bryan caught the clip and posted it on Twitter.

In his tweet he said: "INCREDIBLE SCENES: BBC News accidentally cut away to their news studio, showing a presenter with their feet on the desk."

At the time of writing the tweet had received nearly 50,000 likes. It also led to many others making their own jokes about the error.

Blaze Evergreen (@evergreen_blaze) said: "He was on Twitter, like the rest of us…" Meanwhile, Brian Lynch (@blynch440) added: "Honestly that’s how he should do the news."

Podders (@Morris_Oxford) took the joke even further. They said: "At least we know for definite that he had trousers on."

Boris Johnson has faced a surge of Tory MPs resigning from his cabinet this evening, following his handling of the Chris Pincher scandal. So far, the Prime Minister has refused to resign, but has sacked Michael Gov e.
