Newspaper editing workshop for secondary groups: further information

This workshop is for a maximum of 20 students and runs for approximately two hours.

Students will work in pairs as editors to create an A3 front page using that day's news. They will find out about the subediting process and experience various roles in newspaper production.

They will subedit news stories, write headlines, choose pictures and produce two editions of a newspaper front page to tight deadlines.

Suggested preparation activities

Listed below are some activities you may wish to cover in the classroom before your visit to make the most out of your day.

• Discussion of items in the news in the week, day before or day of their visit to the education centre.

• Discussion of the key opening paragraph of news stories and the 5 Ws of journalism (inverted pyramid). Give students an article without the first paragraph(s) and get them to write the opening paragraph.

• Editing - practise cutting down news stories to a set number of words, ensuring that the key elements of the story remain.

• Headline writing. Analysis of the features and style of headlines in a range of different types of newspapers. Discussion of the importance and purpose of headlines. Give students articles without headlines and ask them to write them.

• Photographs. Discussion of images used in newspapers. How does a picture support a story? Get students to write captions for pictures. Analyse a range of images on the same subject and discuss the impact that each has on the story.
