Newspaper claims Newcastle have "sounded out" Arsenal about Aubameyang

A national newspaper claims that Newcastle have “sounded out” Arsenal about signing their unwanted striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners’ former captain has scored four goals in 14 league appearances this season, but was dropped in early December and has not appeared since.

Currently on duty with his national team Gabon at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Aubameyang was apparently punished for returning late from a trip to France.

On December 14, Arsenal published a statement: “Following his latest disciplinary breach last week, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will no longer be our club captain, and will not be considered for selection for Wednesday's match against West Ham United.”

With Newcastle United ’s top goalscorer Callum Wilson possibly out for months, the Magpies are in desperate need of a striker who will get the goals to keep them up.

The Mirror claims Newcastle have “sounded out" the Gunners about taking the 32-year-old striker for the rest of the season including an option to make the move permanent.”

The newspaper also put a price tag of £20m on any permanent deal for Aubameyang, who Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta allowed to leave early for AFCON - an indication of little he is wanted around the club.

Gabon’s matches at AFCON are on January 10, January 14 and January 18, though if they progress the competition goes on until February 6, the date of the final.

Newcastle are in desperate need of firepower before then though, with their next league fixture now on January 15 against relegation rivals Watford.
