Newslaundry report on Hathras picked for Laadli award

A Newslaundry report has been chosen for the 2025 edition of the Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity, instituted by Population First.

Published on August 19, 2024, Nidhi Suresh’s report had revisited the Hathras gang rape and murder case and detailed the ordeal of the victim’s family. It has been selected in the “web - investigative story category” for English.

In September 2020, Asha, a 19-year-old Dalit girl, was found half-naked, bleeding and barely alive just metres from her house. She died two weeks later in hospital. Her body was forcibly cremated by the Uttar Pradesh police.

The report had pointed out how four years after Asha’s death, three of the accused are back to the village while the victim’s family continues to live a life of “captivity”, caged inside their own home, awaiting relocation that was promised to them by the Yogi Adityanath government.

The awards ceremony will take place on November 19 at the Tata Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai.

Population First is a social impact organisation in Mumbai supported by the United Nations Population Fund. In total, the award recognises 74 outstanding contributions in the media.
