Newsday pulls down its paywall

Paywalls are going up - but here's one that's coming down. New York newspaper Newsday has announced that users can have free access to its website for the next month.

The paper, owned by Cablevision, has struggled to attract paying customers for its online content since it erected its paywall in October last year.

Now, having redesigned its website, Newsday editor Debby Krenek told staff yesterday that "to showcase" its improvements the site will be free until 7 January.

She explained that the free access is being sponsored by Radio City Christmas Spectacular, another arm of Cablevision.
