News you can trust

From the co-editor: We’re building a newsroom that’s focused on the future, but we’re holding on to the things that matter. We think that’s worth making room for.

There is no denying that newsrooms of today are different to those many journalists honed their skills in. The way in which news stories are distributed and consumed has changed drastically – bringing with it both opportunity and risk.

Digital channels enable many different voices to come through, some credible, some not so. The world moves on faster in a 24/7 news cycle. Today’s news quickly moves down or off the homepages of our digital platforms. But with speed comes risk. As journalists, we are conscious of this.

At Newsroom, we value substance more than speed. Taking the time to look closer and delve deeper rather than chase clicks. We stay with a story – and explore as many angles as we can. If need be, we will return to it multiple times and see it through to the end.

This is our commitment to our readers and subscribers.

Historically, newsrooms have always had journalistic integrity at their heart. These foundations are what Newsroom is built on – from our co-editors to our youngest reporter.

We’re journalists. First and foremost.

We’re not in the race for clicks, or to always be first. Yes, we love breaking news stories, but we won’t rush them and risk breaking the trust of our readers. We believe in journalism, the role it plays in democracy, and the importance of knowing the full story. We take the time and create the space for that.

Newsroom is New Zealand owned and run by journalists who are committed to the highest journalistic standards – truth, accuracy, objectivity. Our business model is based on depth and quality not quantity or click bait.

We’re building a newsroom that’s focused on the future, but we’re holding on to the things that matter.

We think that’s worth making room for.
