Newry crash - Three taken to hospital after two vehicle collision

Three people were taken to hospital this morning after a two vehicle crash.

Emergency services were called to Monaghan Street in Newry, at 7.50am on Friday, April 9, after reports of a collision.

Police, two fire crews from Newry and one from Warrenpoint, and the NI Ambulance Service were all at the scene.

Firefighters rescued three casualties who were then taken to hospital.

A fire service spokesman said: "Firefighters were called to a two vehicle collision on Monaghan Street in Newry. Firefighters used specialist road traffic collision (RTC) equipment to rescue three casualties from the vehicles.

"The casualties were transferred to the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and were then taken to hospital. The incident was dealt with by 8.48am."

In a statement, the PSNI said: "Police are currently in attendance of a two vehicle road traffic collision in the Monaghan Street area of Newry this morning (Friday 9 April).

"Minor injuries have been reported.

"Motorists are advised that there could be some disruption to traffic in the area due to faulty traffic lights."

Justin McNulty, SDLP MLA, said: "Police and emergency services are currently dealing with a serious road traffic collision at the Merchants Quay junction of Monaghan Street.

"I understand the road remains closed at this time and police are asking motorists to avoid the area. My thoughts and prayers are with those involved and I really hope no one has been seriously injured."
