Newry City join special cavalcade to celebrate fan's 90th birthday

Newry City AFC joined a special cavalcade to help lifelong supporter Jim McGaffin celebrate his 90th birthday.

Jim reached the brilliant milestone on Thursday, but due to Covid-19 social distancing measures his family were not able to organise a party.

Instead, they invited friends to take part in a special birthday drive-by at Jim's house.

Included in the cavalcade was Newry City manager Darren Mullen who lives nearby.

"Jim's granddaughter contacted our PRO Laura and said they were doing a drive-by and asked if we could take part," Darren said.

"I only live about half a mile out the road so I was delighted to join in.

"The whole cavalcade gathered at about 2pm and travelled past Jim's house. I also brought Jim a gift from the club, a season ticket for next season.

"He was delighted. He has been following us for a long time and is always seen at the same spot at the ground on match days.

"He still goes to games and has been a lifelong supporter, so we were delighted to join in his celebrations."

And Jim was delighted to see the birthday cavalcade pass by his home.

"He loved it," Darren added.

"It is something his family organised, and there must have been about 20-30 cars that travelled past with balloons out the window.

"They wished him happy birthday and then drove on. I am sure his family would have had a party arranged for him during normal circumstances, but this was a pretty good alternative."
