Newry City footballers ready to brave the shave for charity

Newry City's footballers will brave the shave on Saturday by going 'Hairless for the Hospice'.

The Showgrounds club has joined a wider charity effort involving Down GAA star Kevin McKernan and businessman Gary Boyd to raise money for Southern Area Hospice Services.

Newry's total has already climbed past £3,500, with the overall group effort having now raised £20,000.

"The idea came about from a fella Gary Boyd from Louis Boyd Menswear. The Hospice had looked after his mother," explained Newry City manager Darren Mullen, who will also go under the clippers tomorrow.

"He started it, then he got Kevin McKernan who plays GAA for Down involved. Kevin contacted me to see if anyone from Newry City would get involved.

"My wife works for the Hospice, so rather than ask others to do it, I thought I would do it myself. So a few players and the vice-chairman also got involved, and there are few other Gaelic players who have signed up.

"Between the whole group, we have raised about £20,000 which is fantastic. Fair play to everyone involved."

Mullen is going for a number two all over, and while he admits it may look a bit ridiculous, he says it is all for a great cause.

He will be joined by assistant Jervis McCaul, first team coach Damian McCorry, vice-chairman Gary Wilson and players Mark Kelly, John McGovern and Matty Taylor.

"I have never shaved my head before, and dear knows what I will look like," he joked.

"My wife and kids are doing mine so I am starting to get a bit worried.

"The Newry lads are doing it on Saturday, but I believe a couple of the other fellas have done it already.

"The Newry City group are hoping to raise as much money as we can to add to the group total.

"I am getting a number two all over. That's the plan at the minute. I just hope it grows back, and the same colour.

"Some people will suit it okay, but I am not sure about everyone.

"But it is all for a great cause, so I don't mind."
