Newport traffic delays expected as council cuts down diseased trees

Newport City Council has warned of possible delays in Rogerstone as work to remove diseased trees along the A467 begins.

One lane will be closed at a time and a traffic management system implemented in order to minimise the disruption, the council has said.

The trees have been infected with ash dieback – an airborne disease.

The council said the trees could pose a potential risk to the public, meaning it is essential they are cut down.

In a statement, the council said: “Surveys have established there are thousands of infected trees across the city.

"While we regret the loss of any trees, there is no alternative way to deal with the disease and public safety is our priority.

“Surveys have taken place to establish exactly where the trees are and the programme of work to remove them will be based on the stage of the disease and the risk the trees pose to the public.”

For every tree that is removed, two new trees will be planted, but they will need to mature before having the same impact on the environment as those removed.
