Newport smartphone company's move to Imperial Park would allow for a massive expansion

A factory could be set to move its headquarters to Imperial Park in Coedkernew, if planning permission is granted.

SPTS Technologies has submitted a planning application to Newport City Council to move its headquarters from its current site at Ringland Way.

The plans include the development of a two-storey manufacturing and research and development facility, four floors of administration offices, and an atrium.

A gas storage unit for oxygen and nitrogen is included in the plans, in addition to 480 car parking spaces, landscaping, drainage and highway works.

The heaquarters would be based across the currently-vacant Plot 1 and Plot 5 of Imperial Park, if approved – opposite the existing IQE semiconductor plant.

In the planning application, the company states it has outgrown its current site on Ringland Way.

By moving to Imperial Park, SPTS Technologies is looking to expand its capacity and build the profile of the company.

The new facility will be 21m in height, 132m in length and 55m wide.

Formed in 2009, SPTS Technologies was previously known as Sapphire Topco Limited before changing its name in August 2011.

The company provides wafer processing solutions to the microelectronics industry. Its products are ultimately used in everyday consumer appliances such as smartphones, tablet computers, game consoles as well as automotive sensors.
