Newport secondary school to expand with new dining and sports facilities

Ambitious plans to upgrade teaching, dining and sports facilities at a Newport Welsh-medium secondary school have been given the go-ahead by city council planners.

An existing teaching block at Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed, which is unfit for purpose, will be demolished and replaced by a new building under the approved plans.

The new building will contain a main hall, dining hall, classrooms, staff rooms, offices, toilets kitchens, science laboratories and art rooms.

Another building will also be built to provide sports facilities. This includes a sports hall, changing rooms, a fitness suite and toilets.

The playing fields on the other side of Lighthouse Road next to the school will also be developed with the introduction of a grass rugby pitch and a new floodlit 3G pitch.

A new emergency vehicle access will be created across the green as part of the plans.

A design and access statement for the application says the plans signal “a new start and lease of life” for the site and aim to make the school “a modern beacon to Welsh-medium education in Newport.”

The school was first opened by the Newport City Council leader at the time, Cllr Debbie Wilcox, in 2016.

Pupils were taught at the Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon site until they were able to move into the current Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed site in 2018.
