Newport school enters third day of sickness closure against advice of Public Health Wales

A high school closed for a third day because of an "unprecedented high level" of staff sickness absence.

St Julian's School in Newport was closed on Friday and Wednesday following an outbreak of sickness and diarrhoea among staff and students.

In a statement, the school said the Public Health Wales and the local authority's environmental health department advised that the school should reopen on Thursday following a consultation with the headteacher and chair of governors.

But senior staff said the school would remain closed as staff absence remains at an "unprecedented high level" and they are unable to operate the school safely.

Pupils from each year group have been given a programme of work to complete at home during the unscheduled closure.

A statement from the school read: "The headteacher and chair of governors have consulted with various agencies including Public Health Wales and Newport City Council’s   environmental health department: advice from these parties was unanimous in that the school should reopen.

"However, as staff absence due to illness remains at an unprecedented high level, we are currently unable to operate the school safely."

It added: "We wish to reassure parents and students that when the school reopens all advice and guidance will have been acted upon fully. In the meantime, our staff are continuing to work from home.

"We would also like students to work from home if well enough; please endeavour to complete three of the subject tasks from the document shared on the school’s website."

St Julian's is a secondary school with a student population of about 1,500 primarily from Eveswell, Glan Usk, Maindee and St Julian's primary schools.
