Newport road closures in place this weekend ahead of Remembrance Sunday parade

A number of road closures will be in place in Newport this weekend for the city's Remembrance Sunday parade. Newport’ s annual Remembrance parade and service will take place on Sunday, November 13 in the city centre.

The Newport Stedfast Band will lead the parade which will leave High Street at 10.35am and make its way to the Cenotaph at Clarence Place. The City of Newport Male Choir will also attend at the cenotaph along with the Newport Borough Brass Band.

The service, led by the Bishop of Monmouth Cherry Vann, will take place at 10.58am with the guns sounding at 11am to mark a two minute silence. Remembrance Day is celebrated on Friday, November 11 paying tribute to all those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and those who have defended the country in the past and at present.

Residents are advised that there will be road closures in place from 7am until 1pm on Sunday affecting the following roads;

Upper Dock Street (from Skinner Street to Old Green roundabout), Old Green roundabout (including slip roads), Old Town Bridge, Clarence Place, Caerleon Road (from Clarence Place to Church Road), Chepstow Road (from Clarence Place to Cedar Road), Corporation Road (from Clarence Place to St Vincent Road) and East Usk Road (from Clarence Place to Tregare Street).

This year sees Remembrance events return a year after in-person services came back in 2021 after the coronavirus pandemic saw mass gatherings cancelled. Not all events will be going ahead as normal though - last week residents reacted angrily after Caldicot Town Council cancelled this year's Remembrance Day parade because the council couldn't afford to close the road. You can read more about that here. Neath Port Talbot Council has also announced its usual parade won't be held due to "a national shift in the stance of police forces towards security at parades. " On Saturday, November 19 the Merchant Navy Remembrance service in Newport will take place at Mariners Green.
