Newport crash: Pedestrian killed after being hit by car in city centre

A pedestrian has been killed in a crash in a busy city centre crash today.

The victim was hit by a car in Newport, south Wales, police said.

Roads in the city remain closed as Gwent Police investigate the tragedy.

No further information is known about the victim, including their gender.

The crash happened at around 9.45am on Usk Way, a major road which runs through Newport.

The Welsh Ambulance confirmed one person involved in the crash died.

A spokesman said they left the scene at around 12.22pm and took one patient to the Royal Gwent Hospital.

Police have warned drivers to avoid the area.

Chilling moment cyclist sent spinning in the air by speeding hit-and-run driver

Gwent Police had earlier put on Facebook: "Officers and other emergency services are currently on route to deal with a road traffic collision on Usk Way in Newport. Please avoid this area at this time in order for emergency services to work quickly and safely to restore all routes to order."

Buses routes have been redirected.

The closure is between the University of South Wales Campus building - a junction by a large car park - and major roundabout.
