Newport County vs Newcastle United: Lee Ryder's League Cup prediction

Newcastle United could not be faulted last week after demolishing Morecambe in a 7-0 rout.

Given Newport's recent cup pedigree this will be a much stiffer test given Leeds, Leicester, Watford and Middlesbrough have experienced the bitter taste of losing at Rodney Parade.

However, Newcastle are expected to name a strong line-up once again for the encounter against League Two opponents so maybe this can be their night.

Lee Ryder's prediction

Everything went exactly how United wanted it to at Morecambe last week but every football fan knows that's not how the game usually works and lower league opposition often find a way to rile more high profile sides.

That said, if Jacob Murphy can play even half as well as he did against the Shrimpers and others who are vying for first-team places can deliver a performance then you feel Newcastle should have enough for Newport.

This will be Newport's third game in eight days and they don't have the ability to rest and rotate like the Magpies, so there should really be no excuses.

As tough as United found life at Spurs, I expect progress in this one and fans will feel exactly the same.

I'll go for a Newcastle victory but it will be much trickier than last week against an awful Shrimpers side.

Referee

John Brooks (Melton Mowbray)

The whistler has never officiated a Newcastle game before.

Betting tip

Jacob Murphy scored in the last round with a cracking strike and he's got odds of 2/1 to follow up at Newport.
