Newport County rocked as manager Mike Flynn to leave after tomorrow's game with Scunthorpe

Newport County boss Michael Flynn is poised to end his four years in charge of the club immediately after Saturday's League Two clash with Scunthorpe.

The man who has overseen a string of David versus Goliath cup upsets and who took the side close to promotion will call it a day, with his assistant Wayne Hatswell likely to take over according to the South Wales Argus.

The news will stun Newport fans, but Flynn has been left frustrated by the club's inconsistent start to the season.

He said he needed to think about his future after the Wembley play-off final loss to Morecambe at the end of May, but carried on at the helm and brought in 15 new players.

However, it appears Flynn feels he has taken County as far as he can and is calling it a day.

“I don't want to keep having reactions. I want to put a run together,” he said after a fine win over Wallsall was sandwiched by bad losses to Northampton and Barrow.

Under Flynn, County have had play-off losses to Tranmere and Morecambe, but they captured the nation with some thrilling cup exploits.

Newport beat Leeds, Leicester and Middlesbrough and performed really well against Tottenham, Manchester City and Newcastle.

Last season they beat higher-ranked Swansea City and Watford in the League Cup.
