Newport County goalkeeper Tom King scores from his own penalty area against Cheltenham Town

Goalkeepers scoring goals always evokes a brilliant reaction.

When they do it from their own penalty box it creates bedlam.

That's exactly what happened on Tuesday night, when Newport County stopper Tom King struck against Cheltenham Town.

Many supporters would have rubbed their eyes when they saw King's name appear on the vidiprinter after 12 minutes.

The Exiles keeper placed the ball down for a goalkick and with gusto hammered the ball deep into the Robins' half.

The ball was taken by the wind and when it bounced it skipped off the turf at Whaddon Road and flew over the head of home keeper Josh Griffiths.

Newport tweeted: "GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!! GOALKEEPER TOM KING HAS JUST SCORED FROM HIS OWN AREA... We don't even have a GIF for him!"

It provoked a great reaction on social media.

"Goal of the season surely," one viewer tweeted. "They all count. Come on Newport County!" added another.

The score was 1-1 at the break thanks to King's freakish effort and the Robins scoring on the stroke of half-time.
