Newport County boss Michael Flynn gives verdict on Ben Garner's exit and Bristol Rovers vacancy

Michael Flynn sympathises with Ben Garner after he was sacked by Bristol Rovers on Saturday, but the Newport County boss admits the Pirates' results were not good enough.

Garner was relieved of his duties after the 4-1 home defeat to Fleetwood Town on Saturday, with Rovers 18th in League One.

Flynn, priced at 25/1 to succeed the 40-year-old in the early odds from the bookmakers, believes the sale of Jonson Clarke-Harris in the summer made the job difficult for Garner.

"It’s tough, you don’t like seeing any manager lose their job, but I think it’s only been five wins in 26," Flynn said on Quest's EFL highlights show.

"It’s been tough, and they lost their top scorer (Clarke-Harris), so it was always an uphill battle."

The Exiles boss was asked if he thinks the Rovers vacancy is a good opportunity.

"It depends whether they’re going to give the manager time and backing," Flynn replied.

"They’ll have aspirations to get into the Championship and with the size of the club that’s what they should be aiming for.

"He (Garner’s successor) is going to need backing and he’s going to need time."
