Newport council to hold by-election after councillor resigns

A by-election is to be held by Newport council after a councillor resigned due to health reasons.

The by-election will be held following the resignation of Victoria ward councillor Christine Jenkins.

The Labour councillor was in her second term at the time of her resignation, having served Victoria ward since being elected in 2012.

Victoria ward covers the area around Maindee and is currently served by Labour Councillor Abdul-Majid Rahman.

The council's leader, Jane Mudd, said: "On behalf of the council and all members, I would like to thank Christine for her hard work, dedication and commitment to her ward and the city as a whole. We wish her the very best for the future."

A notice of vacancy has been published and a by-election will be called. A date for the by-election has not yet been fixed.

The last council election in 2017 saw 31 Labour councillors elected, achieving 62% of seats. The Conservatives currently hold 24% of seats, with the remainder being held by the Liberal Democrats, Newport Independents, and an independent candidate.
