Newport Council rule out plans for a fanzone for Wales' Euro 2020 game against Denmark

Newport Council has confirmed it won't be running official fanzones for Wales' Euro 2020 game against Denmark.

A spokesman confirmed that there were no plans to hold any official fanzones for Saturday's match, despite such areas being allowed in Wales under the current coronavirus regulations.

Both Cardiff and Swansea local authorities had earlier in the week confirmed they had also opted against fanzones due to rising concerns over the Delta variant in Wales, and it now appears that Newport City Council have followed suit.

Wales’ deputy chief medical officer Dr Chris Jones has warned Wales is now at the start of its third wave of coronavirus. He said that until the end of May Wales had seen relatively low numbers of the variant linked to clusters, but that "more and more unlinked cases across Wales" have since become apparent.

However, it is not clear whether or not the rise in cases will cause an increase in hospitalisations. Wales recorded its first Covid-related death in ten days on Wednesday, June 23. Read the latest update here.

"Based on the experience in Scotland, the risk of being admitted to hospital with delta appears to be doubled," Dr Jones said.

"Across the UK, we are starting to see an increase in the number of people who have been admitted to hospital, although at the moment, this remains relatively low, which suggests vaccination is providing strong protection against infection and severe disease.

"We are at the beginning of a third peak driven by delta, and we probably are two to three weeks behind what is happening in England and Scotland, where delta has been spreading for longer."

Wales face Denmark in their crunch Euro 2020 last-16 tie on Saturday, June 26. The match kicks off at 5pm UK time and will be played in Amsterdam's Johan Cruyff Arena.

Wales fans will be watching from home or in the pub as as police in Amsterdam have said they will not be allowed into the country due to the UK not being on Holland's list of Covid-safe countries. That is despite Danish fans being told they would be able to go to the match in the Netherlands and avoid quarantine provided they are in the country for less than 12 hours.

Newport has previously organised fanzones, most notably during Euro 2016 when over 5,000 people packed into Rodney Parade for Wales' semi-final defeat against Portugal in an event joint-run by the council and Newport Live. Another fanzone had been due to be held in Friars Walk shopping centre during the same tournament but it was cancelled due to safety fears.

A Newport City Council spokesman confirmed that there were no plans for a fanzone on Saturday but did not comment further.
