Newport council announces when its waste recycling centre will reopen but there are some important changes

Newport ’s recycling centre is to reopen later this month with restrictions in place.

The household waste recycling centre (HWRC) on Docks Way will reopen on Tuesday, May 26 , Newport City Council has announced.

However, the public will have to make a booking prior to visiting the site, and will not be allowed to turn up without one.

Opening times at the site will be temporarily extended, but the number of vehicles able to access the site each day will be limited in order to support social distancing and ensure the safety of both residents and staff at the centre.

Full details of operation and site rules will be released next week. The booking system will go live on Thursday, May 21.

The news comes as other councils around Wales announced details of their plans to reopen recycling centres, which have been closed since lockdown restrictions came into effect.

First Minister Mark Drakeford announced last Friday that libraries and household waste recycling centres will be allowed to reopen, although it is up to Wales' 22 local authorities on an individual basis as to if and how this is done.

Newport City Council said: “Now more than ever we all need to consider the environmental impact of waste and reduce, reuse and recycling before disposing. Residents will be expected to use the comprehensive kerbside collections as their primary way of disposing of their waste and recycling.

“Visits to the HWRC should only be booked for waste that cannot be collected on the kerbside or not safely stored at home for the time being – only go if it is essential.”

The council added that it was continuing to monitor the effects of coronavirus and that its “aim is to reopen services as soon as possible, but only when it is safe for customers and staff”.
