The Welsh Government has announced an extra £12m to repair potholes on the country's roads.
Housing and local government minister Julie James MS announced the commitment to provide local authorities with cash to fix potholes and improve roads, pavements and active travel routes on Wednesday.
Newport will receive a £426,473 share of the £12m pot which will be split between the 22 unitary authorities in Wales.
The Welsh Government said the additional funding aims to allow councils to continue with planned highways maintenance works, boosting the economy and making active travel safer.
Ministers also hope areas will be better able to respond the impact of more severe weather events, which are becoming more frequent due to the climate crisis.
Julie James MS said: "We know that during the pandemic with a quieter road network most councils have already made good use of the opportunity to undertake repairs and improvements.
"We are providing this extra funding to reflect the flood damage we have seen to highways across Wales and the ways in which we are using our local environment differently.
"By providing this extra funding, we are enabling local authorities to continue making improvements to roads in Wales, boosting the economy and making roads safer for active travel."
The four other local authorities within the Gwent area will also receive a share of the funding.
In total, the five councils of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, and Torfaen, will be given £1,858,883.
This is how much each council in Gwent will get:
- Blaenau Gwent - £229,715
- Caerphilly - £583,462
- Monmouthshire - £376,841
- Newport - £426,473
- Torfaen - £242,392
