Newport car wash ordered to close after it continued to operate during lockdown

A car wash in Newport has been ordered to close after it was found to be operating in breach of the coronavirus guidelines during lockdown.

Newport Hand Car Wash on Cromwell Road was handed a premises closure notice by Newport council on Monday after it was found on February 15 to have failed to close its premises to the public during the current alert level four restrictions.

Enforcement officers from the council's Trading Standards said the premises "failed to close to members of the public any premises operated as part of the business or service" on Monday.

It warned that the business faces a possible fine if it fails to comply with the closure notice which is in place for 14 days regardless of any changes to the current restrictions.

Under the Welsh Government alert level four restrictions, automatic car washes are classed as essential services and are therefore allowed to remain open.

However, this does not apply to hand or manual car washing services.

First Minister Mark Drakeford is due to announce the result of a review of the current restrictions on Friday, February 19.

He has hinted at a "very modest" easing of some restrictions, although it has not been confirmed where those changes will be. Read what he has said so far here.
