Newport businesses you can still eat from during the fire break lockdown

With Wales set to enter a fire break lockdown on Friday from 6pm, it means further heartbreak for businesses who have already struggled due to the coronavirus crisis.

With the pandemic having already wiped out months' worth of trade and thousands of pounds worth of revenue for traders, Newport is just one of many areas which have been hit hard.

But with a better idea of what to expect from a lockdown this time, many are offering customers the chance to get their favourite fixes and support their local business throughout the lockdown.

Here are some excellent and worthy local businesses in Newport you can still support if you can spare a few quid.

1. Beth's Bakes

Based on Church Road in Maindee, Beth's Bakes is your one-stop shop for freshly baked cupcakes, cakes, cookies and more.

Look in the window and you'll see a mouthwatering array of intricately decorated cupcakes, caramel blondies, Nutella swirl brownies and much more besides.

The shop will be trading as takeaway only, so you'll still be able to taste some of that sugary goodness throughout the lockdown.

2. mEAT Bar and Grill

mEAT Bar and Grill has been serving up great, juicy burgers for a while now, but its most recent owners, who took over in June 2019, have taken things up a few notches.

Whether it's something on the hotter side with chilli infused beef or a vegan spicy Bankok burger, there's something for everyone here.

And thankfully the restaurant will be staying open for takeaway, delivery and collection for the next two weeks. Find out more on their website or social media.

3. Holy Cheesus

A toastie from Holy Cheesus (Holy Cheesus)

Let's be honest, is there anything better than a simple toasted sandwich?

Located on Bridge Street, Holy Cheesus offers all things toastie, from the simple to the extravagant - from a breakfast special featuring bacon, sausage, egg, black pudding, mushrooms and cheese, to chilli con carne and pesto sandwiches on delicious bloomer bread.

And the restaurant has said it will remain open for takeaway and delivery on Just Eat. More information here.

4. Tiny Rebel

A mainstay of Newport and Wales at this stage, Tiny Rebel hardly needs an introduction.

From its better known favourites like Cwtch and Clwb Tropica, the Newport business has been serving up cold beers from both its High Street bar and brewery bar in Rogerstone during the pandemic.

And you'll be able to quench your thirst throughout the latest lockdown, as they've confirmed they'll be offering a click and collect service through lockdown (they've got food, too). More information here.

5. SUPA THAI Vegan

This food stall serves 100% plant based Thai and vegan cuisine, and is offering collection - but you need to be quick, as orders are only open Sunday to Wednesday for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday pick up.

More information here.

6. Cooper's Vintage

OK, so this one isn't food, but they are moving their business online and delivering during the lockdown. From cushions to sheep footstools and funky wall art, Cooper's on Caerleon's high street has been pleasing lovers of vintage for nearly a decade.

The shop, which also has an outlet in Rhiwbina, will be closing its stores from Friday until November 9, but you can still shop online via its website for your vintage fixes.

Delivery is free if you're in the Caerleon or Rhiwbina area, too.

7. The Green Kitchen

One of Newport's newest members of the business community, The Green Kitchen recently opened on Cromwell Road and serves plant-based toasties, breakfasts, salad bowls, cakes and other main meals.

Open since August, the cafe and restaurant will be open for deliveries and pick up, and you'll be able to order from the shop door.

More information here.

8. Parc Pantry

Founded in 2014 by Matt Ellis and Ant Cook, Parc Pantry in Malpas is well known for its scrumptious brunches as well as its fresh bakes and coffee.

The cafe is launching a new take-out menu from this weekend, though it will be collection only.

More details here.

9. Popadoms

Always a good option in a packed field when it comes to Indian options in Newport, Popadoms on High Street is well liked particularly for its piping hot Vindaloos and rogan josh.

The restaurant and takeaway is open for delivery and collection throughout lockdown.

More information is available here.

10. Crown'd Candy

Another Newport newbie, sweet shop Crown'd Candy only opened its doors in Maindee two weeks before the latest lockdown, which isn't much time to get acquainted to its offering of milkshakes, boiled sweets, jelly sweets and more.

The shop, which also offers vegetarian and gluten free sweets, is still taking orders online and offering contact-free delivery through lockdown.

11. Banny's Burger Bar

Banny's Burger Bar is located at Breeze (Matthew Horwood)

Located at Breeze bar on Cambrian Road, Banny's Burger Bar offers flame grilled burgers, homemade pizza, loaded fries and sides.

It recently launched its delivery system for customers to order online or by phone.

12. Bailey's Bodega

Normally a favourite for drinkers, this Baneswell boozer recently announced it will be offering a takeaway food menu during lockdown.

Although details on what will be on offer are scarce as of yet, you can follow the Bailey's Bodega Facebook page for more news.

13. Atlantica Snack Bar

Located on Market Street, this fast food outlet is also offering a takeaway service during lockdown.

Featuring American-style favourites from burgers to hot dogs, pizzas and chips, you can view the menu and order here via Just Eat.

14. Tin Can Kitchen

Based on Chartist Way in Rogerstone, Tin Can Kitchen specialises in Cajun-style burgers, American style hot dogs and authentic Mexican recipe burritos.

The restaurant will be operating a takeaway, collection and delivery service throughout the firebreak lockdown, with a number of mid-week deals on offer. Be sure to try their latest Halloween inspired burger of the month, the Hallo-peno burger - how good does that look?
