Newport barbers shut down over coronavirus rule breaches after they are found cutting customers' hair without masks or visors

A barber shop in Newport has been closed down for 28 days after it was found to have breached coronavirus regulations.

Fahad’s Barbers on Livingstone Place, Newport was served with the closure order by Newport City Council 's enforcement team earlier this week. Officers visited the premises on Monday, June 7 and found that two barbers were cutting customers’ hair and that neither was wearing a face mask or visor.

The council previously issued an improvement notice to the shop on September 25, 2020. During that visit, it was found that staff were cutting customers' hair without any PPE, face covering or visor. There was also no implementation of face coverings for customers or signage relating to the need to wear face coverings. That notice was withdrawn on April 1, 2021.

The business was ordered to close immediately from June 7 for 28 days in order to secure compliance with the coronavirus regulations. It can appeal to the Magistrates' court within seven days after the notice is issued.

Local authorities in Wales have the power to take action against businesses or premises who are believed not to be adhering to coronavirus guidelines. Reasons for taking action include a lack of implementing social distancing, staff not adhering to guidelines including the wearing of face coverings, or lack of prominent display of coronavirus signage and hand sanitiser.
