Newmilns drink driver banned from roads after being caught five times over the limit

A Newmilns man who was caught driving with over five times the limit of alcohol in his system has been banned from the roads for three years.

Andrew Unwin pled guilty to the offence and appeared before Kilmarnock Sheriff Court to be sentenced.

The 60-year-old admitted driving on Brown Street, Newmilns while having 126 microgrammes of alcohol within 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 22mg.

Unwin, of Lawrie Street, also pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without insurance.

Unwin’s defending agent told the court: “It was complete stupidity and he does not wish to excuse it other than to say that he knows he should not have done it.

“He accepts that matters could have turned out much worse than they did but no one was hurt and that’s the main thing.”

Passing sentence, Sheriff Shirley Foran said: “There is a problem here that you need to address.”

Unwin was put on a community payback order with 12 months supervision, 140 hours of unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for three years.
