Newmains United unearth new talent in Port Glasgow thriller defeat

BY DYLAN INGLIS

Newmains United lost a nine-goal thriller – but Paul Davies reckons they’ve unearthed a winning talent.

The Victoria Park side were made to pay for the goals they conceded against Port Glasgow in a 6-3 defeat.

But young striker Jamie Henderson’s display – which included a brilliant double – was something positive co-boss Davies could take from the clash.

He said: “Jamie has come in and played well. He was away last week but he’s scored goals in the games he’s played.

“He’s a fantastic talent and I’m sure by the end of the season Jamie will have a few goals under his belt.”

Finding the net hasn’t been an issue for Davies’ side who have scored in every one of their opening five West of Scotland League matches.

But with 22 goals going the other way it’s clear for United where improvements must be made.

United had lost 4-1 at Kello last midweek and saw Port Glasgow take the lead on 27 minutes when Euan Campbell finished from a free-kick at the back post.

Newmains fought back and went in all square at half-time after a cross aimed for Kris Jarvie was swiped over his own keeper’s head by Port defender Eddie Walton.

Campbell added his and Port’s second on 55 minutes then Jack McLarty struck from the spot two minutes later.

The action didn’t slow down as in the space of four minutes Henderson made it 3-2 only for Campbell to complete his hat-trick to restore the two-goal advantage.

Henderson would bag his second with a smart finish from a one-on-one but two late goals from Luke Hemphill and Ross Kearns sealed victory for the visitors.

Davies admits his side can’t keep putting themselves in tough positions and added: “Right now there are very few games we don’t score in.

“We say in our team talk before each game that any team that plays us has to score two goals to beat us because we always score.

“Against Port Glasgow we had to score seven to win and that’s just not acceptable.”

Newmains’ next fixture is a trip to face St. Cadoc’s this Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
