Newmains United co-boss Paul Davies says his side will survive Coronavirus threat

Gaffer Paul Davies insists Newmains will survive the coronavirus shut down.

The COVID-19 crisis has led to claims some clubs could go to the wall with their income streams hit.

Victoria Park co-boss Davies is confident the way United manage their budgets means they won’t be hit as hard.

Davies said: “First and foremost, this is about people’s lives and so football plays second fiddle to any inconvenience or disruption to sport.

“At the moment all that matters is that people are safe and we get through this. What will happen in the next few weeks and months in football is unknown. But promotions, relegations, who wins trophies and the pyramid system are all irrelevant when people’s live are potentially on the line.”

United have suffered a stop-start season after their clubhouse was closed for work when asbestos was discovered, then the winter weather forced games to be called off.

Davies continued: “The whole season has been a struggle financially for Newmains. We’ve been out of our ground and not received a single penny in gate revenue in all but four games at the beginning of the season.

“We are very fortunate at Newmains because we run the club based on our means so we’ve had strict budgets put in place. We have also had great help and support from North Lanarkshire Leisure and it has all helped us make sure our house is in order.”
