Newmains man admits calling and sending offensive texts to woman and her mum

A Newmains man has admitted phoning and sending grossly offensive texts to a woman.

Ryan McLelland pleaded guilty to repeatedly calling the woman at her home on Boxing Day last year.

During the course of the calls, McLelland shouted, swore and repeatedly made derogatory remarks towards the woman and her mother.

The 31-year-old also sent a number of texts that were threatening and abusive and repeatedly made grossly offensive remarks and threats of violence.

The court heard that the victim in the case was called by McLelland at her home. She could tell he had consumed alcohol due to the tone of his voice.

McLelland became abusive over the phone and called her a series of names.

The woman had earphones in at the time and took them out to put the call on loudspeaker.

Both the woman and her mother could hear McLelland continuing to shout in an aggressive tone.

The accused then hung up the phone and the woman started to cry. A short time later McLelland called again.

During the course of this call, McLelland stated he was going to come to the woman’s home and “do in” her mother.

Police were contacted soon after with McLelland then sending a series of threatening texts.

Sheriff Allan McKay deferred sentence on McLelland until June 17 and called for a range of reports to be prepared ahead of his next appearance in the dock.
