Newmains earn historic West of Scotland League win over Yoker

Craig Gupwell has saluted Newmains United’s players after a change of approach altered their fortunes and secured their first ever West of Scotland League win.

The Victoria Park side collected their first points of the season with this historic win at Yoker Athletic last weekend.

Goals in either half from Lee Nichol and Marc Howson lifted them off the bottom of the division and up to seventh spot in Conference C.

After losing their opening two matches Gupwell and fellow co-boss Paul Davies tweaked things for the clash at Holm Park.

They saw the move pay off handsomely as the side followed their orders to the letter in an impressive display.

Now the gaffer hopes the result will act as a springboard for the remainder of the campaign as they gear up for a trip to St Anthony’s this weekend.

Gupwell said: “After a couple of recent heavy defeats we approached this match with a slightly different game plan.

“We worked really hard on that approach in training in preparation for the game and to a man every player carried out the instructions to perfection and executed the game plan.

“A clean sheet was our aim and we knew if we got that we’d get our first three points on the board.

“Hopefully this result is a foundation for us to build on going forwards.”
