Scots community turns out to pay respect to little Laia with 'big beautiful smile'

The Newmains community came out in force to remember the little girl with a big beautiful smile who captured all of their hearts.

Seven-year-old Laia Jenkins passed away following her battle against an inoperable aggressive brain tumour leaving her family and friends heartbroken.

Due to current coronavirus restrictions, a full church service for Laia was not possible but her funeral cortege, complete with horses dressed as unicorns, made its way through the village on Friday afternoon.

Many people lined the streets in solemn tribute while one local singer sang Let It Go and Over The Rainbow as the procession passed.

A number of Disney Princess characters such as Snow White as well as Mickey and Minnie Mouse also walked beside the cortege.

Laia’s funeral was later held at Holytown Crematorium with only close family present.

Earlier in the week, heartbroken pupils and staff at Newmains Primary lit candles to remember little Laia.

Following Laia’s diagnosis last year, a series of fundraising events took place in order to help the youngster complete her bucket list, many involving staff and pupils at the school.

These included Laia’s friend Jayden Ross doing a sponsored cycle around Strathclyde Park and Newmains Primary headteacher Scott Smith raising cash by doing a skydive.

And on Thursday the school urged everyone to light a candle to remember Laia’s life.

A statement reads on the school’s Twitter page: “We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of one of our pupils Laia Jenkins.

“To quote one of Laia’s favourite films, Annie, ‘you’re never fully dressed without a smile’ and she had such a beautiful one. It lit up a room.

“Please join us by asking an adult to light a candle to remember that smile and honour Laia’s memory.”
