Newmains co-boss hopes keeper is back long-term after injury nightmare

Paul Davies hopes Cammy Farquhar is back for keeps after he returned way ahead of schedule, writes Dylan Inglis.

Newmains feared goalie Farquhar would be out for at least five months when he dislocated and fractured his elbow in June.

But with the help of the No1’s physio wife he was between the sticks for Saturday’s clash with Renfrew.

United lost 2-1 but co-boss Davies admits being able to recall several key players like Farquhar has seen optimism build.

He said: “It’s good to have some players back – obviously Cammy returned in goal which made a huge difference to us.

“Cammy is actually back way ahead of schedule. At the time he got the injury we thought he might have needed an operation.

“But it’s now turned out that he doesn’t. Thankfully his wife is also a physio. She was in on Saturday strapping him up which was a massive help. It’s a huge boost having Cammy back and a huge bonus for the whole squad.”

United fell behind after just 17 seconds when Jamie Benton pounced on a defensive mistake.

They equalised just after half-time when Frew’s James MacLennan put the ball through his own net. But the striker would ultimately redeem himself by netting the winner on 67 minutes.

Newmains now have a week off from action.
