Newmains chippy hands out free food to NHS heroes and supermarket workers

A big hearted Newmains chippy sent out deliveries to hospital heroes and supermarket workers in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Franco’s Fish and Chip Shop, which opened in the village in 2009, has opted to close in the wake of the government imposed lockdown but that didn’t stop Franco and the team from using the last of their stock.

Deliveries were made to staff at University Hospital Wishaw, Cleland Hospital and Asda in Newmains.

Franco’s wife Natalie Marrocco said: “Franco decided to close down the shop to protect staff and the customers. This meant he was left with a lot of stock which he wanted to put to a good use.

“He, and some of the staff went in to work for the day to use up any remaining stock and to give something back for the people who deserved it.

“We made one delivery to Wishaw General, Cleland and the Asda in Newmains for the staff there. The welcome we got was quite overwhelming.”
